About The Author
Rationalization: "The devising of self-satisfying but false causes for one's behavior." Sometimes we don't know why we do what we do, and maybe such ignorance is OK, or should be. Our temptation is always to explain, but that constantly does nought useful. In truth, it can equitable get in the direction of substantial understanding.
Rationalization - A Clinical Example
When John went to the hypno-therapist, he was hypnotised,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and given the post-hypnotic instruction to obtain up and put aboard his wrap anytime the therapist touched his nostril. Once he was out of the trance, they began to speak. The therapist scratched his snout by some point in the chat, and John quickly stood up and put on his coat.
When the therapist queried him why, John explained "Oh, I thought we were achieved," and he took off the coat and sat down another. Shortly afterwards, the physician touched his nose again. John again immediately stood up and put on his coat. "It's getting chilly in here," he explained this time. He not knew he was unconsciously responding to a post-hypnotic suggestion.
Of course, whether you consider approximately it for a moment, you'll realize that this scenario is not peerless to hypnosis. Many factors work into our determinations and actions, and we perform as whereas we're conscious of them entire. Like poor John, we feel forced to explain ourselves - and to believe our explanations. One of our strongest habits is rationalization.
Just Say 'I Don't Know'
When a baby darts a panel at his brother, and his mother demands "Why would you do that!?" he says, "I don't know." It namely almost certainly the honest answer, yet it isn't acceptable. With hours to learn the child, a pychologists might not understand the child's movement with assurance, but a six-year-old namely expected to understand his action and have an explanation ready in seconds.
Now, he may not understand his own motivations, but he rapidly understands that an explanation is expected. As a result,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along adulthood, it is infrequent for anyone of us to say "I don't know" when asked about our behavior. We directly explain. This is a problem,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], isn't it? How can we learn the true occasions if we already accept our rationalizations?
Perhaps a better approximate is to get in the habit of saying "I don't know." For the sake of our own solace, we could follow with "Maybe it's for and let the explanations spill out, at the peak of we aren't also quick to accept any of them. We absence to understand that it isn't always essential to explain.
Suppose, case in point,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that you are dodging a ertain person,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and don't actually know why. Isn't it better to quit the answer open than to accept a artificial explanation based on a habit of self-justification? If you depart questions unanswered, you may someday have a better understanding. Quick answers mean a fast stop in your cerebral.
Self-explanation can be the inverse of self-understanding. Maybe it's time to study to approve our ignorance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and to begin observing ourselves. Just mention, "I don't know," to break the accustomed of rationalization.
