The Horror
The film's plot revolves around a single-mother (Teri Polo of 'Meet The Parents' fame) who brings her two children to a new, seemingly short on life town. The move hits Dane, the eldest, quite hard and he proceeds to shove headphones in his ears and layabout as if it is him against the world as he spies on his pretty teen neighbour, Julie. The younger sibling [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lucas, takes full advantage of Dane's constant moping and teases him in front of Julie so much that Dane chases him into the basement of their new house. There they discover a trapdoor covering a hole. It is this mysterious hole in the ground that begins to plague their lives and with the aid of Julie the trio must confront their worst fears and tackle the enemies that dwell deep within the hole.
For all its poor exposition, 'The Hole' does deliver some very mature and brave themes and doesn't cheapen them for a younger audience. Dane and Julie in particular, have to tackle some heavy handed issues which will prove very engaging to audiences. Lucas' tale provides a more comical horror as he is stalked by an animated Jester/Clown harking back to the days of 'Chuckie' and 'Leprechaun'. However [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are a few times where the scene was rather humorous without necessarily trying to be, making his whole
By the summer of 2010, the 3D movie craze began to efficiently consume its fair share of cinema screens. Opinions are rather divided on the image-popping glasses, with many people leaving 3D films feeling rather under whelmed.
The Hole, with no relation to the 2001 claustrophobic thriller, seeks to change this by picking its moments to make the most of the 3D benefits. Director Joe Dante has made an attempt to bring the horror genre down from its established perch with adult certificate ratings featuring smatterings of gore, filth and enough psychological wackiness to make even a harmless girl scout seem suspicious and twisted. Instead, Dante opts to bring the scare factor to a younger audience, but faces a difficult challenge in attempting to frighten a generation whose sensitivity levels are so numbed that putting their hands on an iron would not even produce a scream.

The investigation into the horror below is let down by uninspired choices of discovery, making it feel very 'Goosebumps' at times. One particular instance sees Julie seemingly solve part of the riddle of The Hole and know exactly what to do as if she has been sitting on an epiphany toilet all night. Decisions like these are not backed up by character progression; instead the details feel like an afterthought. The introduction of the previous occupant of the house and the new life he is leading is brilliantly characterised [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but as already stated, the choice to investigate this part of the world comes to an abrupt end.
As far as stabilising such a age specific film like this goes, Dante does a fine job. There are some very well planned horror scenes that push the boundaries for a teen horror in what is often laden with uninformed attempts at connecting with such a generation. One scene in particular features Julie being locked in a bathroom with a crying and ominous presence in one of the stalls. The use of a point of view shot as Julie peers under the cubicle is very potent in its delivery and it's these kinds of scenes that could have made The Hole into a really testing teen horror. However, far too often we are delivered with cheap, anti-climatic thrills with our lead characters' creeping towards swinging doors or origins of strange sounds, only to bump into one of their other buddies.
