Some reactions are more severe. In 2004, Merck & Company withdrew the painkiller Vioxx from the market after evidence showed up that it increased the risk of cardiovascular problems, even though the drug had been cleared for use through clinical trials.
Reporting Averse Side Effects
Paddy Moore, writing for the CBC (February 17, 2004), said the tragedy forced officials to look into their drug approval system: “Regulators realized with tragic clarity that it was insufficient to establish the safety and effectiveness of a drug before it went on the market. A system was needed to track medications once the general population had access to them.”
What is an Adverse Drug Reaction?
Almost all medications have side effects; some are mild [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and some can be severe.
Adverse Reaction Reporting Identifies Problems
Pharmaceutical companies are required by law to report any adverse reaction they are notified about. However, Carly Weeks, writing in The Globe and Mail (April 30, 2010) reports that “traditionally, too few doctors and patients have taken the time to report side effects to Health Canada, which means issues with certain drugs can go unrecognized for an extended

In the early 1960s a suspiciously high number of babies were being born with missing limbs or stunted arms and legs that ended in what looked like flippers. The deformities were cropping up in Canada, the United Kingdom, and West Germany.
The adverse reactions included deformities, the need for hospitalization, and even death.
As Carly Weeks puts it, the information gathered is “an important tool in understanding and recognizing potential issues and can potentially help prevent widespread problems before they get out of control.”
A common side effect of many medications is weight gain. According to Dr. Lawrence Cheskin, Director of the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center, “The reasons why some medications cause weight gain are not always clear [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but in many cases a drug increases appetite or makes people crave certain foods.” He cites insulin and beta blockers used to treat hypertension as among those that cause people to put on extra pounds.
The Canada Vigilance Program is a repository for all reports of adverse drug reactions. In 2009 the Program was alerted to 27,496 occurrences of adverse side effects from various pharmaceuticals [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this was up from 20,360 the year before. According to the Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter (April 2010), “Of the domestic reports received, 74.9 percent were considered to be serious.”
As a result of the thalidomide case, post-approval reporting systems have been set up around the world. Internationally, adverse drug reactions are coordinated through the Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring, which is part of the World Health Organization.

The cause was traced to a sleeping pill called thalidomide that was also used to suppress morning sickness in pregnant women. The drug had been declared safe to use after clinical trials, but it was pulled from the market in 1961.

All medications must go through extensive clinical trials before they are approved for use by the general public. However, those trials are usually carried out with relatively small samples of patients and it may not be until millions of doses have been prescribed that statistically significant problems can be identified.
